Porbandar, located along the Arabian Sea, is a historic coastal city known for its rich maritime heritage, mythological significance, and as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. From ancient settlements to a modern municipal corporation, the city reflects a journey of cultural legacy and progressive governance.

Mythological Roots

Porbandar is believed to be associated with Sudama, the close friend of Lord Krishna, and is referenced in ancient scriptures like the Skand Puran.

The city was named after Goddess Porav and was originally situated along the banks of the Asmavati river.

Medieval
Jethwa Dynasty

Porbandar was a princely state ruled by the Jethwa Rajput dynasty, known for their patronage of art, architecture, and urban planning.

The city developed wide roads, public places, gardens, and uniquely carved white stone buildings, earning it the name "White City".

1809
British Protectorate

In 1809, Porbandar became a British protectorate while continuing as a princely state.

This period introduced structured administration and modern civic governance practices.

1869
Birth of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar on 2 October 1869.

His teachings of truth and non-violence brought global recognition to the city.

1887
Formation of Municipality

Porbandar Municipality was established in 1887 during British rule to manage civic services.

It handled water supply, sanitation, roads, and urban planning for the growing port city.

1948
Post Independence

Porbandar acceded to the Indian Union on 15 February 1948.

It later became part of Saurashtra and then Gujarat state in 1960.

2020
Porbandar–Chhaya Merger

On 22 June 2020, Porbandar and Chhaya municipalities were merged into a single urban body.

This led to the formation of Porbandar–Chhaya Nagarpalika.

2025
Municipal Corporation

In 2025, Porbandar–Chhaya was elevated to a Municipal Corporation.

This marked a major milestone in urban governance and development.

Modern Porbandar

Today, Porbandar stands as a blend of heritage and modernity — a city known for its cultural legacy, tourism appeal, and evolving urban infrastructure under the Municipal Corporation.
